Besprechungen: Atlas över Sverige

Summary

This review discusses two Nordic atlases. The first is the 20th installment of the Swedish National Atlas, covering population, culture, and science, which utilizes Sweden's excellent statistics to create diagrams of population development from 1721 to 1958, dot maps of schools and media distribution, and maps of deep-sea fisheries, supplemented by Swedish and English texts. The second is the first installment of the Atlas of the Republic of Austria, led by H. Bobek with cartography by I. Arnberger, planned as six installments totaling about 120 pages across 12 thematic groups. This installment features detailed building maps of Vienna at 1:25,000 and 1:50,000, using over 50 color tones and patterns to distinguish construction periods, heights, and urban fringe types, which, despite their complexity, remain clear and striking. It also includes climate maps, tourism diagrams, election mosaics, and road traffic frequency maps. The review notes the atlas's flexible graphic design and extensive use of recent data, accompanied by a community directory and boundary map.
