The national atlas tradition of the United Arab Emirates is a relatively young but deliberate endeavor, emerging in the late 20th century as the federation sought to consolidate its identity and document its rapid modernization. The first edition, published in 1993 by the United Arab Emirates University, marked the initial attempt to systematically map the nation’s physical, human, and economic geography. This was followed by a parallel English-language edition in the same year, reflecting the country’s bilingual administrative and educational context. The 1993 atlases established a comprehensive, thematic structure, integrating topographic detail with socio-economic data, and served as a foundational reference for planners, researchers, and educators. In 2024, a new edition was produced by the Federal Centre for Geographic Information, signaling a technological leap into digital cartography and updated data. This latest work underscores the UAE’s commitment to maintaining a current, authoritative national geographic record, aligning with its vision for data-driven governance. Together, these three atlases trace the evolution from academic initiative to state-led enterprise, and they now stand as enduring artifacts of the nation’s geographical self-understanding, influencing subsequent regional mapping projects and reinforcing the importance of national cartographic heritage in the Gulf.
