Curatorial Note

This gallery presents the national atlas tradition of Sudan, a country whose cartographic heritage reflects its complex geography and history. The sole atlas in our collection, the *National Atlas of Sudan*, was published in 1987 in English, marking a significant moment in the nation’s efforts to document its diverse landscapes, resources, and peoples. The atlas emerged during a period when many post-colonial African states were consolidating their national identities through comprehensive mapping projects. Its editorial approach combined thematic layers—physical geography, climate, population, and economic activity—into a single authoritative volume, designed to serve both administrative planning and educational purposes. While no contemporary reviews or later scholarly commentaries are preserved in our records, the atlas stands as a testament to Sudan’s commitment to systematic knowledge production at a time of regional change. Its legacy lies in providing a baseline for subsequent geographic studies and in affirming the role of cartography in nation-building. Visitors are invited to consider how this single volume encapsulates the aspirations and challenges of a country at a crossroads, offering a snapshot of Sudan as it saw itself in the late 1980s.
