Curatorial Note

The Latvian national atlas tradition, though modest in scale, reflects a deep commitment to cartographic self-representation. Emerging in the post-Soviet era, when Latvia reasserted its independence and cultural identity, the country's atlas-making became a means of reclaiming its geographic narrative. The sole atlas in this collection, published in 2023 by the renowned cartographic house Jāņa sēta, stands as a contemporary testament to this effort. Its editorial approach combines modern GIS technology with meticulous attention to Latvia's diverse landscapes, from its Baltic coastline to its dense forests and agricultural heartlands. The atlas is structured thematically, covering physical geography, population distribution, economic activity, and cultural heritage, all presented in Latvian to reinforce national linguistic identity. While this single volume does not constitute a long lineage of national atlases, its publication marks a significant milestone: it is the first comprehensive national atlas of independent Latvia in the 21st century.
