Curatorial Note

This gallery presents a single, yet significant, volume from the Republic of the Congo: the 1969 Congo Atlas, produced by the Office de la Recherche Scientifique et Technique Outre-Mer (ORSTOM). The atlas emerges from a pivotal moment in the nation’s post-independence history, when newly sovereign states sought to consolidate their territorial identity through scientific documentation. ORSTOM, a French research institution active in former colonies, brought a tradition of systematic, field-based cartography to this project. The atlas is notable for its comprehensive, thematic approach—integrating physical geography, demography, and economic resources—rather than a purely topographical survey. Compiled in French, it reflects the colonial scientific legacy while serving the developmental ambitions of the young republic. Although no contemporary reviews are preserved in our collection, the atlas stands as a rare artifact of its time, offering a snapshot of Congo’s landscape and society at a critical juncture. Its influence lies in its role as a foundational reference for later national mapping efforts, and as a testament to the collaborative, albeit complex, relationship between postcolonial states and metropolitan research bodies.
