The Atlas of Canada Project

Summary

In 1943, the Canadian Social Science Research Council established a committee to explore the feasibility of a comprehensive Atlas of Canada. Distinguishing between dictionary-type and geographical atlases, the committee examined outstanding international examples and surveyed map resources within Canada. It concluded that Canada urgently needed a modern atlas, but whether it should be scientific or popular remained under investigation.
