Polémiques autour des nouveaux atlas d'Albanie

By Régis Darques·

Summary

Two demographic atlases of Albania, recently issued by the Academy of Sciences and INSTAT, fill a long-standing cartographic gap. Based on international cooperation, the INSTAT volume presents municipal-level census maps, while the Academy’s atlas covers seven topics over a century, despite some cartographic flaws. The latter sparked polemics over ethnic minorities; the author dismisses them as exaggerated, since the book groups minorities under one label. Imperfect as they are, these atlases are a key step toward objectively recording Albania’s demographic and territorial reality after decades of censorship.
