Summary

This paper presents the program for the new National Atlas of the Armenian SSR. It reviews the achievements of the 1961 edition and argues that scientific progress and environmental challenges require a second-generation national atlas. The new atlas is planned in two volumes: the first covers natural conditions, natural resources, and environmental protection, with greatly expanded maps of geology, geomorphology, climate, hydrology, soils, vegetation, wildlife, and landscapes, plus new environmental assessment and forecast maps. Remote sensing methods and mountain geosystem mapping are emphasized. The second volume addresses socio-economic issues. The atlas aims to support research, planning, and rational environmental management.
