Cartographical Survey: National Atlas of Ghana. First Folio

By R. W. Anson·

Summary

This review assesses the first folio of the National Atlas of Ghana, comprising 16 maps on agriculture, demography, transport, education, and banking, mostly at 1:1,500,000 scale with 1960–1970 data. It commends the project for undertaking this complex task shortly after the republic’s founding and acknowledges effective symbolization (proportional circles, dot maps, flow lines). However, it criticizes inconsistent color intensities, variable black/gray map elements, and symbols overlapping text, which reduce clarity. The review concludes that while content and techniques are valuable, greater consistency would significantly improve appearance and legibility.
