Atlas & Book Reviews: Atlas de la Republica de Chile, 2nd ed.

By Dale Steele·

Summary

This review evaluates the Atlas de la Republica de Chile, a comprehensive national atlas published by Chile's Instituto Geografico Militar in 1983. The atlas contains five sections covering physical geography, cultural history, national thematic data, and regional maps of all thirteen administrative divisions. Strengths include a 1:1,000,000 full-color topographic map and consistent arrangement of regional thematic sets. The reviewer identifies production flaws, including typeface inconsistencies, low-visibility symbols, and misregistered printing on approximately ten pages. Despite these shortcomings, the atlas remains a valuable, fairly priced resource with data largely from the 1970s. The review also advises purchasers to specify surface shipping to avoid unexpected air freight charges from the publisher.
