Summary

Established by the IGU in 1956, the Commission on National Atlases promoted atlas publication, quality, and comparability. At Stockholm in August 1960 it reviewed a four-year program that had produced the French monograph Atlas nationaux, a bibliography, analytical articles, consultations, and an exhibition representing 26 countries; recommendations for unifying principal maps remained unfinished. Renewed for 1961–64, the commission proposed standardizing map programs and legends, examining regional atlases, expanding international cartographic use, and studying how to keep atlases current.
