The Atlas of Canada

Summary

This article reviews the background, planning, production process, and content structure of the third edition of the Atlas of Canada. Initiated by the Canadian federal government in 1948, the atlas aimed to systematically present the physical, human, and economic geography of Canada while serving as a historical record of national development. The article details the interdepartmental planning mechanism, the design of base maps and projections, data collection and cartographic procedures, and the thematic organization of its 110 plates, covering historical, physical, demographic, economic, transportation, and political topics.
