Summary

This article introduces the Atlas of Australian Resources, compiled by the Department of National Development, Commonwealth of Australia, and published by Angus & Robertson, Melbourne, from 1953 onwards. The atlas comprises an excellent series of colour maps at a scale of 1:6,000,000, with approximately 22 maps published by the time of writing. Subjects covered include demography, water systems, social services, land uses, and natural resources. Each map is accompanied by a descriptive pamphlet of 6–20 pages, containing useful statistical data and sometimes photographs, line-drawings, and further reading lists. The cartography and printing are exceptionally good, and a sturdy binder is available at a small additional cost. The atlas serves as a highly useful companion to the recently published Australian Encyclopaedia.
