Summary

This paper reviews the 1962 Atlas of the Ukrainian SSR and Moldavian SSR. The atlas comprises 90 plates and is divided into physical-geographical and socio-economic sections, with the former (36 plates, 54 maps) considerably more extensive than the latter. The physical section covers orography, geology, tectonics, Quaternary deposits, geomorphology, mineral resources, a large set of 23 climate maps, soils, vegetation, forests, and fauna, concluding with a physical-geographical regionalization map. Although the socio-economic section is smaller, it introduces more methodological novelties, such as maps of population density and settlement distribution. Overall, the atlas is constrained by the template of previous Soviet regional atlases and offers limited methodological innovation, though several maps show updated or improved content.
