Summary

This is an academic review of the Atlas of the USSR, published in 1962 by the Main Administration of Geodesy and Cartography of the Soviet Ministry of Geology and Mineral Protection. The atlas contains 147 plates, significantly larger than the 1954 first edition. The review notes that the new atlas is divided into three parts: the first contains 55 physical maps of various Soviet regions with more precise orography; the second comprises 32 natural maps covering geology, climate, soils, vegetation, and fauna, some of which are entirely original; the third includes 18 socioeconomic maps addressing population, transportation, industry, and agriculture. The reviewer concludes that while the atlas demonstrates considerable progress in cartographic technique and content compared to the earlier edition, the economic maps are of a lower standard. Nevertheless, it represents a major achievement of Soviet cartography and geography.
