Summary
J. Roglić reviews the Atlas of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, published in Prague in 1966 by the Central Administration of Geodesy and Cartography. It contains 58 double sheets and a nine-page index, totaling 258 pages with 433 maps, diagrams and related illustrations. The basic maps use a scale of 1:1,000,000; sheet backs carry Czech explanations, English and Russian summaries, and supplementary maps and graphics. The review surveys the atlas’s treatment of the natural environment and its larger socioeconomic section, covering population, industry, agriculture, transport, trade and living standards. Roglić praises its synthesis of extensive material, technical execution and efficient layout, highlighting the methodological contribution of geomorphological maps and agricultural production types. His observations include contrasting population trends in the Czech and Slovak areas, uneven industrial concentration and regional transport differences. He regards the atlas as an important practical guide to national development and regrets the lack of a comparable work in his own country. His principal reservation concerns placing agriculture between industry and transport.
