Summary

The four maps presented show how the Portuguese population is served with the basic services of water supply, sewerage systems and sewerage treatment plants, solid waste systems and housing electricity. — The information is based on data obtained in 1981 by the Portuguese Department of Statistics (INE): the Census 81, preliminary results. For each one of the basic services is given the percentage of people served, versus the total people of the administrative division («parish» or «county»). Analysing the maps we can see that, in 1981, there were yet very great needs concerning the water supply, the sewerage systems and the solid waste systems. The region to the north of the Tagus river shows greater needs than the Southern region, excluding the Lisbon area. With this kind of maps, we want to give an help to the characterization of life quality of the Portuguese people, and according to the needs, to move the Authorities for the big effort which is needed to overcome a great number of serious situations.
