Summary

The actual Holm Oak and Cork Oak Chart (scale 1:1 000 000) was basically drawn up from data assembled in a «Preliminary-Chart» of the Agricultural and Forest Land Use Great Groups Chart in the scale 1:250 000. The Agrarian Survey and Land-Use Planning Service (SROA), now a National Centre (CNROA), published the last mentioned chart, as well as the charts dealing with the holm oak and the cork oak, scale 1:250 000, and, by photographic reduction, the Cork Oak Chart, scale 1:500 000. The mapping criteria for these plant species took into consideration their pure, mixed (dominant or dominated), and scattered formations. Reference is made to the minimum mapped areas. The choice of colours for each species was based in their bioclimatic significance and, as much as possible, according to Gaussen's chromatic spectrum. The morphological characters of the holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia and Q.ilex), cork oak (Q. suber), and their hybrid species (Q. X mista) are briefly presented. Reference is made to their polymorphism, expressed by several varieties and forms, and to the geographic distribution of these species in the Western Mediterranean Region, specifically in the Iberian Peninsula. 6
