Summary

The International Geographical Union’s National Atlases Commission met in Moscow on 11–20 August 1958, hearing twelve country reports and discussing atlas content and cartographic techniques. It supported K. A. Salishchev’s research programme and adopted G. A. Ginzburg’s recommendations on mathematical elements of atlas maps. Its approved work plan called for a comparative monograph, a bibliographic centre, consultations on national atlas preparation, and a secretariat at Moscow University; Soviet specialists undertook the monograph, and Polish geographers the bibliographic centre.
