On the plenary meeting of the Commission on National Atlases of the International Geographical Union

Summary

Bashlavina reports on the first plenary meeting of the International Geographical Union’s Commission on National Atlases, held in Moscow on 11–20 August 1958. Reports covered atlas production in several countries and methods for mapping natural conditions, population and economic activity. Participants proposed coordinated scales, projections, symbols and core map lists to improve comparability. The commission endorsed Salishchev’s definition of national atlases and planned a monograph reviewing published and forthcoming atlases with production recommendations, alongside bibliographic work and consultations for atlas-producing institutions.
