Summary

This review compares the third edition of the National Atlas of Kenya, dated 1970 and released in 1971, with its 1959 predecessor. The reviewer praises improvements in binding, colours, and accompanying texts across its 43 map plates. Updated coverage includes geology, minerals, vegetation, wildlife, agriculture, and infrastructure, with a new ecological-potential map. Population data still derive from the 1962 census, while the soil map may imply greater knowledge than is warranted. The maps also show difficulties in securing pastoral land titles and uneven school distribution. The reviewer identifies errors in an ecological-zone description and the direction of cattle movement, but commends the atlas’s information content and price of 120 Kenya shillings.
