Summary
This article reviews the new National Atlas of Sweden, whose first volume appeared in spring 1990. Planned to comprise seventeen volumes, it replaces the outdated Atlas of Sweden (1953-1971). The first volume focuses on the history of Swedish cartography, from Ptolemy to modern remote sensing, detailing topographic and cadastral maps. Coordinated by the Stockholm University Department of Human Geography and funded by the Swedish Parliament, the atlas involves over 300 experts. While the new general map of Sweden (1:700,000) has drawn criticism for its cartographic principles and toponymic accuracy, the rest of the volume, particularly Ulf Sporrong's contribution on interpreting historical cadastral plans, is of high scholarly value. The review also notes the omission of significant earlier works from the bibliography.
