Summary

Published to mark Konstantin Alekseevich Salishchev’s seventieth birthday and fifty years of scholarly activity, this commemorative article reviews his contributions to cartographic research, education, major atlas projects, and international scientific cooperation. Following a historical-biographical approach, it traces his development from field expeditions and astronomical and topographic surveys in the Indigirka, Kolyma, and Chukotka regions to his leadership in Soviet cartography. Salishchev participated in or directed such major works as the Great Soviet World Atlas, the Marine Atlas, the Reference Atlas of the World, the Physical-Geographical Atlas of the World, and the State Map of the USSR at 1:1,000,000 scale. His textbooks and methodological studies introduced new interpretations of the subject and methods of cartography, the nature and classification of maps, cartographic generalization, representational techniques, and automation. Of particular importance was his formulation of the cartographic method of research, which established systematic procedures for using and transforming maps to analyze spatial patterns, relationships, temporal dynamics, and possible future developments. As head of cartography at Moscow State University, he also shaped higher cartographic education, organized major research laboratories, and trained several generations of specialists. His guidance on national and regional atlases, including the Atlas of the Azerbaijan SSR, and his work in Soviet and international geographical organizations extended his influence beyond the USSR. The article concludes that Salishchev’s integration of field practice, theoretical innovation, atlas production, institutional leadership, and teaching made him a founder of Soviet scientific cartography and a major contributor to the development of modern cartography worldwide.
