Summary

The Commission’s seventh plenary meeting, held in Madrid on 26–30 April 1970, reviewed completed and ongoing national and regional atlas programs in several countries. It also examined automated thematic mapping, synthetic socioeconomic maps, trade mapping, regional-atlas modeling and standardized transport symbols. The Commission reaffirmed support for national, regional and metropolitan atlases; proposed planning toward a future “Thematic Atlas of the World”; prioritized atlas updating, forecasting maps and computer-assisted production; and requested that its eighth meeting coincide with the 1972 Montreal congress.
