In Memory of Eduard Imhof 1895-1986

Summary

This memorial address commemorates Swiss cartographer Eduard Imhof and assesses his foundational contribution to international cartography. Drawing on his artistic ability, scholarly authority, perseverance, and personal warmth, Imhof played a decisive role in establishing the International Cartographic Association in 1959 and became its first president. The Association subsequently expanded rapidly, creating an international forum that strengthened cartography’s disciplinary identity, professional standing, and community.
