In Memoriam: David Pelham Bickmore 1917–1993

Summary

This memorial article reviews the life and professional legacy of British cartographer David Pelham Bickmore (1917–1993). Drawing on major stages of his career and international activities, it highlights his co-development with A. R. Boyle of the Oxford System of Automatic Cartography, the first comprehensive automated cartographic system; his leadership of the Experimental Cartography Unit; and his role in initiating the Euro Carto meetings. Bickmore also contributed to environmental mapping and efforts to establish a world digital database for environmental science. The article argues that his enduring significance lay in his visionary and persistent promotion of computer technology in cartography. Through technical innovation, institutional leadership, and global collaboration, he helped move modern cartography decisively into the computer age.
