First Issue of New Swedish National Atlas, 'Maps and Mapping'

Summary

This article reports on the publication progress and content of the first volume, 'Maps and Mapping', of the new National Atlas of Sweden. Released in April 1990 in both Swedish and English editions, with a PC version planned, the volume is detailed through its table of contents, authors, and page allocations, covering topics from historical maps and official map series to modern remote sensing and geographical data banks. Notably, it includes a new, computer-generated map of Sweden at 1:700,000 scale, produced using the Gauss-Krüger projection. This map, based on a digital elevation model with 50-meter grid resolution, presents Sweden's topography through eight elevation strata and relief shading, integrating place names, roads, waterways, and administrative boundaries, thereby serving as a unified geographic reference for the entire atlas.
