Ferjan Ormeling: International Champion of Cartography

Summary

This article commemorates Dutch cartographer Ferjan Ormeling (1942–2025) by reviewing his academic career and international service. Drawing on his education, research, publications, and professional appointments, it highlights his contributions to atlas cartography, toponymy, spatial-data quality, cartographic education and visualization, policy, media mapping, and the history of cartography. During his long career at Utrecht University, Ormeling produced more than 500 publications, developed influential textbooks and training manuals, advanced the Dutch National Atlas, and supported historical map research through Explokart. He also strengthened international cooperation as Secretary-General and Treasurer of the International Cartographic Association and Vice-Chair of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names. His honorary degrees, medals, and knighthood reflected an exceptional combination of scholarship, teaching, diplomacy, and institutional leadership, establishing him as a major champion of modern international cartography.
