Commission des Atlas nationaux

Summary

Established within the International Geographical Union on 18 August 1956 in Rio de Janeiro, the commission planned to improve national atlases through systematic review, recommended map programmes, attention to projections and scales, standardized legends, and scientifically based preparation methods. It hoped this work would support international comparison and atlas unification. Soviet institutions were already participating; proposals were to be reviewed in 1959, with a research report planned for the 1960 International Geographical Congress in Stockholm.
