Summary

The visible material comprises the publication notes and preface to volume 6 of Results of Science and Technology: Cartography (1974), the opening of K. A. Salishchev’s “Synthetic Mapping,” and the closing bibliography and contents. Based on literature published in 1971–1973, the volume surveys cartographic synthesis, the cartographic research method, automation, mathematical cartography, thematic and marine mapping, urban mapping, map-production techniques, aerial and space photography in geographical research, cartographic education, and cartographic history. Salishchev defines synthetic maps as representations of the integrated characteristics of phenomena, developed by considering their components and interrelationships. Synthesis requires attention to the regularities of spatial systems, factors governing their structure and dynamics, and their principal elements and connections. He distinguishes maps displaying synthesis achieved through other methods from maps in which synthesis develops during compilation, and discusses successive levels of synthesis from system components to elementary and higher-order systems. The preface proposes continuing related topics in the next volume and addressing international thematic maps, maps for mass use, and new mapping methods in relation to the planned 1976 International Cartographic Association conference in Moscow. Identifiable closing references concern Russian and Soviet cartographic history, early maps, surveying institutions, and atlases. The bibliography and contents do not establish the arguments or conclusions of the omitted chapters.
