Summary

The prefatory and publication materials for Volume 5 of the Cartography series in Results of Science and Technology (Moscow, 1972) outline reviews chiefly covering literature published in 1970–1971 on mathematical cartography, automation, thematic mapping, geographical atlases, mapping and map-publication technologies, and applications of aerial and space photography in geographical research. The volume also includes special reviews on the history and development of cartographic generalization and the extent of cartographic coverage of seas and oceans; the latter responds to readers’ requests. The editors plan future coverage of cartographic history, cartographic research methods, new map types, and cartographic education.
