Cartographic technique in the Atlas of Sweden

Summary

This paper examines the integrated production process of the Atlas of Sweden, from planning, manuscript compilation, and drawing to reproduction, printing, and bookbinding, all conducted within a single facility to achieve an optimal time-cost ratio. It illustrates through examples how map manuscripts and the editor-in-chief's ideas are individually transformed into printed atlas maps. Additionally, early attempts at computer-generated map manuscripts are discussed, particularly in demographic and agricultural applications for the planning of Gävleborg County in Northern Sweden.
