Summary

This is an abstract of two German-language cartographic book reviews. The first reviews the eighth installment (1973) of the Atlas of the Netherlands, noting that its geological map and other sheets are noteworthy, but the political overview maps appear antiquated in style, contrasting sharply with the fresh thematic maps. The physical regional maps, forming the atlas's core, are largely successful as working maps with high information density, using hypsometric tints and shading; however, the mixed use of two scales may cause dimensional misjudgments, and the city maps resemble tourist route maps. The second reviews the New Air Photo Atlas of Rhineland-Palatinate (1972), which fills a gap in regional literature with 72 color aerial images. The photos vividly supplement the abstract and generalized nature of maps, though an accompanying overview map is suggested for better orientation. The image selection and textual explanations are generally commendable, with only a few images of lesser quality. Both reviews evaluate the works' merits and shortcomings from a cartographic perspective.
