Summary

This review discusses the Atlas of Australian Resources, prepared by the Australian Department of National Development, and the calendar on the development of land surveying published by the Lower Saxony State Survey Office. The atlas, planned to comprise about 50 sheets, covers natural foundations (soils, climate, vegetation) as well as population, economy, and transport. The first ten sheets, at a scale of 1:6 million, are accompanied by explanatory booklets by leading experts, though the texts are somewhat detached from the maps. The calendar systematically reviews the history of surveying in Lower Saxony, including Gauss's arc measurement, the Hanoverian and Prussian surveys, and emphasizes the need for continuous revision of survey and map products in response to landscape changes. Both publications demonstrate technical progress and historical development in cartography and surveying.
