Automated techniques in support of planning for the national atlas

Summary

Planning for a second edition of the National Atlas of the United States is aided by interactive computing and a system of codes and computer programs for displaying schematic layouts of map sheets. This form of computer-assisted cartography is particularly useful when editing a table of contents for an atlas with individual sheets that are to be sold separately. Electronic mail and computer-managed information exchange promote communication among collaborators on the National Atlas Project.
