Summary

This review introduces the first volume of the Atlas of Antarctica, published in 1966. Containing approximately 500 maps, diagrams, and illustrations compiled from Soviet and international sources, the volume systematically represents Antarctica’s natural conditions and major scientific findings. Its three sections cover exploration history, general thematic mapping, and detailed regional maps. Topics include topography, geology, geophysics, climate, glaciology, oceanography, and biological distribution, with innovative treatments of the ionosphere, cosmic radiation, terrestrial currents, and subglacial bedrock relief. Large-scale maps, aerial photographs, self-contained legends, explanatory notes, and a bilingual-script place-name index enhance accessibility and practical use.
