Summary

This is an academic review of the fifth installment of the Atlas of the Danube Countries, edited by Josef Breu and published in 1970 by the Austrian Institute of East and Southeast European Studies in Vienna. The installment includes thematic maps on climate, geology and tectonics, geomorphology, population distribution, and traffic. The review notes that despite some maps using relatively small scales (1:2 million to 1:4 million), they are well-executed, accompanied by brief commentary in four languages and ample source references. The author observes that the population map, using dot/circle symbols, provides a general impression of distribution patterns but has limited utility over such large areas; the traffic map, depicting railway networks and frequency via bands of varying widths, effectively highlights contrasts between Central and Southeast Europe but offers moderate overall applicability.
