This paper discusses the interdependence between national and regional atlases. Coordinated by the Commission on National Atlases of the International Geographic Union, atlas compilation worldwide follows two basic concepts: synthesizing geographical sciences through cartography and providing systematic maps for planning and scientific purposes. National atlases, bounded by country borders, feature comprehensive thematic maps and serve as historical documents of a period, while regional atlases are more flexible in theme selection, emphasizing analytical maps that reflect both current conditions and development potential. Despite differences in scale, content, and function, the two types of atlases complement rather than substitute each other.
