Summary

This paper examines the sources and compilation methods of thematic maps, with a focus on the development, objectives, and content structure of national and regional atlases. It points out that thematic map compilation requires scale transformation and redesign of representation methods based on existing topographic maps, supplemented by literature and historical archival materials. The article traces the evolution from Finland's first national atlas to the atlas compilation efforts of various countries after World War II, with particular attention to Szaliscsev's recommendations, including the ratio of physical to economic maps (1:1 for national atlases, 1:2.5 for regional atlases). Additionally, the paper reviews the development of geological mapping in Hungary, from early surveys by foreign scholars in the 19th century to the establishment of the Hungarian Geological Institute and its systematic mapping work, demonstrating the significant role of geological thematic mapping in serving national economic construction.
