A National Atlas of Britain

E. G. R. Taylor outlines the national atlas proposal initiated by the British Association’s Geography Section in 1938 and subsequently discussed at Dundee. The plan combined physical, human and historical maps for use by researchers and the wider public. Taylor describes a basic scale of 1:1,000,000 and a common base map, enlarged or reduced as needed, to facilitate comparisons. Existing maps and statistics would supply much of the content, while subjects such as water supply, smoke pollution and soils required further research or data collection. She stresses careful treatment of incomplete evidence and identifies unresolved problems of territorial coverage in Ireland and scientific cooperation. These are proposed arrangements, not a description of the completed 1970 atlas.

This notice discusses a national atlas proposal reported in 1940, without establishing its relationship to the linked 1970 volume. The author supports the project provided it covers the whole British Isles, including all Ireland, and has a permanently funded organization to revise its maps. The notice argues that incomplete soil, megalithic and geological surveys, together with gaps in historical research, make some proposed maps premature and their classifications unreliable. It recommends a permanent, adequately staffed unit, possibly at the Ordnance Survey, to conduct preliminary surveys and publish revised editions.
