This article reviews the technical production of the Atlas of Togo, a large national development atlas commissioned by UNESCO, focusing on its editorial reconstruction, fair drawing, plate making, and four-color printing in China. The source materials were unsuitable for direct reproduction because of incomplete design, uneven linework, inaccurate film positioning, numerous errors and omissions, absent legends, and damage to some original sheets. The production team therefore redrew all 88 maps, added legends and French annotations, and adopted the domestically developed CPW computerized phototypesetting system to improve both efficiency and typographic consistency. During editorial redesign, the map frames and page layouts were adjusted, shared geographic base maps were separated into reusable plates, and thematic information was emphasized while accommodating registration requirements. Plate making employed a CP-341 electronic color scanner, graded halftone screens, film-based processing, punched positioning, and large-sheet assembly. Color effects were achieved primarily through screened overprinting of yellow, magenta, and cyan, supplemented by controlled black densities for labels, roads, and thematic linework. Natural tonal transitions, staggered overlays, and varied patterns further enhanced visual clarity while reducing film use and production costs. Completed within six months, the atlas was praised by United Nations experts for its rich content, vivid colors, clear hierarchy, dignified appearance, and excellent printing and binding, and was judged to meet leading international standards. The project demonstrates that systematic editorial planning, effective use of available equipment, and process innovation can substantially improve the quality and competitiveness of large thematic atlas production.
