Viktar Tsemushau assesses Belarusian historical geography through a critical review of medieval and early modern maps in the historical section of the National Atlas of Belarus (2002). He credits the collective compilation and careful editing of accumulated scholarship, supported by earlier cartographic traditions, and the atlas’s large format and scholarly presentation. He criticizes P. Lysenko and G. Shtykhau’s map of the ninth to early thirteenth centuries for restricting coverage to modern Belarus, drawing questionable boundaries and failing to represent political and territorial change. His detailed examination of V. Nasevich’s two Grand Duchy of Lithuania maps identifies unsuitable chronological divisions, simplified or erroneous boundaries, inconsistent territorial information and inadequate treatment of Lithuanian–Muscovite relations. He nevertheless values the attempt to classify late-fifteenth-century landholdings, while questioning its dating, boundaries and categories. Tsemushau advocates integrated regional research combining archaeology, place names and diverse documentary sources; boundary reconstruction using evidence from both a territory and its neighbors; cautious retrospective and backward reconstruction; and computer-based cartographic work. He warns against identification by name resemblance and uncritical borrowing from existing maps. He strongly praises Mikhail Spiridonov’s sixteenth-century map for its source work, information organization and historically appropriate settlement names, and credits Spiridonov’s organizational role in producing the historical section. Suggested improvements include boundary refinement and coverage beyond modern Belarus. Overall, he finds weak continuity between maps, insufficient use of neighboring countries’ research, and a concentration on political history that leaves socioeconomic history outside the section and ethnoconfessional and cultural history inadequately represented. He judges Belarusian medieval historical geography to remain at an early stage.
