Book Reviews: Nasjonalatlas for Norge: Helse

Steinar Nielsen · 1997

This review discusses two academic works. The first, 'Nasjonalatlas for Norge: Helse' (National Atlas of Norway: Health), is the inaugural volume of the Norwegian national atlas series in a new portable school atlas format. It focuses on health, featuring 200 maps and extensive statistical data that illustrate regional variations in health status and service availability, pioneering medico-geographical atlases in Northern Europe. The second, 'European Tourism: Regions, Spaces and Restructuring', examines the interplay between tourism production and consumption and the reorganization of economic and social spaces in Europe, drawing on a research program funded by the European Science Foundation. It offers a comprehensive overview of tourism's historical and spatial development. Both works fill significant gaps in medical geography and tourism studies, respectively.

Et tilbakeblikk på det norske nasjonalatlaset

Jens Christian Hansen · 1998

This overview and critical evaluation of the planning and production of a Norwegian National Atlas traces its history from the early 1960s to the present time. Weaknesses in organization, the funding system and editorial work are described. Despite professional dedication and considerable financial input, the results have been disappointing, and the National Atlas has to be written off as a project.

Litteraturanmeldelse: Nasjonalatlas for Norge: Idrett

Hans Soleroil · 1998

This is an academic review of the National Atlas of Norway: Sport and Facilities (1997), the second thematic volume in the national atlas series. The atlas aims to comprehensively present the geographical distribution, organizational structure, facility development, and socio-cultural context of sports and outdoor recreation in Norway through maps, diagrams, and photographs. The review highlights the work's solid professional quality in data processing and cartographic presentation, successfully placing sports within a societal and geographical perspective. The book is organized into seven chapters covering topics such as sports organization, facilities, competitive sports, keep-fit culture, local community activities, outdoor recreation, and aesthetics/environment. The review acknowledges its documentary value and pedagogical utility while also discussing definitional challenges, data limitations, and certain cartographic shortcomings. Overall, the atlas is considered a significant reference for understanding the geography of sports in Norway.
